Between a mountain and the sea
Biokovo rises 1,762 metres almost straight out of the Adriatic, which is why the towns here are narrow, the beaches are white shingle and the light changes twice a day. Makarska is the town. The Riviera is the sixty kilometres either side of it — about four of them wide.
